The Devil's Bathtub, Hocking Hills, Ohio

Ever get that swirly feeling like you just fell into the "Devil's Bathtub"? Waters rage, waves tumble, you're in turmoil, your sense of direction gets skewed, and your stomach becomes the captain of your attention.

For some, the baptistery in a church brings vivid recollections. It's often an immersion into turmoil, questions, conflicts, and a heightened awareness that your options are now limited to one--the church. In the midst of the tumult, the one thing you thought was in church seems missing--God.

If church isn't providing the presence of God, then where do you go? Out the other side?

If you do your inner ear is still awhirl and now your balance is gone. Your instinct says to abandon it all, drop the whole thing and chalk it up to another dream shattered, bubble burst.

Wait.

Take a trip downstream with us. Just watch for those whirlpools of unrequited guilt, sandbars of hyper details on "right-living," and dead-end tributaries that lead you into doctrinal head games that leave you stranded in...a desert.

You definitely don't want to end up in the desert. You get sand in your mouth, as well as your shoes. Walking in sand is sluggish. You don't get very far. The mirages--those promising visions of water will evaporate into fantasy as you reach--more sand.

So...here's a rest-stop to sort things out. A grassy bank where you can take it easy for awhile. Stay as long as you like. Join the discussion Or if you'd like to share your personal story with us, you can here: Stories
